Hemlock House - NY

As my most ambitious build to date, Hemlock House is a chunky homage to the many eras of wood. Modern materials meets old-world techniques and heritage timbers.

The main frame is built with Standard Lumber of mostly hemlock and fir. Walls rise 10 feet before meeting with a steep gable that brings the peak of the building up another 9 feet. A sleeping loft sits over the (yet-to-be-built) kitchen and supports the ridge beam with a massive chunk of historic hand-hewn barn oak. Supporting the two walls is a tie beam of reclaimed ash from the same barn. The lap siding is a live-edge hemlock, Amish milled and installed green. Eventually the bark will fall away, but until then this siding creates a raw and direct relationship with the trees that surround it, including Hemlocks. In the gables, reclaimed cedar shingles, also potentially 100+ years old, bring a playful texture and add to the overall chunkiness.

Surrounding the main living area, six tall windows create a panoramic view of the forest, allowing both sunrise and sunset to fill the space. Above, two 6.5’ Triangle windows add a bold statement and bring the upper canopy into view from below. These same windows allow those in the loft to see straight out into the forest, while small bedroom windows create a private corner for cozy retreat.
